For the vast majority of automotive history, one thing was true: Once the car left the factory, all changes were on the customer. Sure, automakers sold factory-approved parts through dealers, but customers had to purchase and install them separately. Then, the Tesla Model S happened. With it came over-the-air (OTA) software updates, and they weren't just bug fixes. Entire new features are added to the cars by the automaker years after leaving the factory, most of them free (so far). Now, lots of automakers are doing it. Some, like Rivian, are absolutely cranking them out—our long-term 2022 Rivian R1T has received 16 since we got it.
Early on, Rivian committed to releasing an OTA software update for its vehicles every month. Since January 2022, the company has automatically pushed 17 updates to the R1T EV pickup, and if you're doing the math, you'll notice some months had two updates. At the same time, the company has been consistently updating its mobile app, as both vehicle and app updates often involve the same new or revised features.
To keep things organized and easy to find, we're compiling all the updates in this one post that'll be updated as long as we have the truck. To make it a comprehensive list, we've also included the three updates that went out before we got our truck. You can get the lowdown on your current software version in the Settings app on the truck, and every new update comes with a list of new features and fixes before you install it.
More On Our Long-Term 2022 Rivian R1T:
Update 2023.18.0, 6/1/23
- Added the ability to schedule charging from the mobile app
- Added the ability to open the Gear Tunnel doors from the mobile app
- Added the ability to send addresses to the truck from the Yelp app on your phone
- Improved Driver+ lane centering
- General improvements to the Media app
- Improved proximity locking and locking with Android phones
- General improvements to Drive Cam feature
- Updated Camp Courtesy mode to automatically turn off and reset the headlights to auto when the vehicle exceeds 15.5 mph.
- Fixed bugs that caused Alexa to fail to play music even after saying it would, that caused Zoom audio and microphone to stop working after switching apps on the center screen, that caused drive modes not to respond after selecting Off-Road mode, that caused an existing phone key to be removed when adding a new one, that caused fast charging not to work until the vehicle is restarted, that caused the media source icon not to appear in the Media app, and that caused the vehicle not to launch as hard as it should from a stop.
What We Think: We love all the things we can do from the mobile app and adding the ability to change the charging schedule and open the Gear Tunnel doors remotely is certainly helpful. We also love being able to send addresses to the truck's built-in navigation system from Google and Apple Maps on our phone, so the addition of Yelp is a welcome one. We also love the Camp Courtesy feature given how bright the R1T's exterior lights are and are happy to have it turn off automatically in case we forget when leaving the campground.
Update 2023.14.0, 5/1/23
- Added a new Gear Guard app
- Added a dash cam feature called Drive Cam
- Added the ability to set a custom charge limit between 50 and 100 percent
- Added the ability to name the vehicle
- Moved the odometer and trip odometers to the Settings app
- Added a warning chime when you try to lock the truck with a door or other opening not closed
- Increased the amount of time the electrical outlets can be left on continuously to 3 days
- Updated climate control to keep fan speed low at startup so as not to immediately blow cold or hot air at passengers
- Updated climate control to automatically turn off seat heater or cooler when a seat occupant gets out and restart them when the person returns
- Made improvements to Driver+ disengagements, lane centering, and lane keeping
- Made improvements to phone battery draw when near the vehicle and using phone as key
- Fixed bugs that prevented Bluetooth from playing automatically, that left Bluetooth artwork on the screen when disconnected, that caused the mobile app to display incorrect status information, that caused the vehicle to lock from long distances with phone as key, that caused the status and domain bars on the center display would restart, and that caused a low 12-volt battery warning not to appear
What We Think: Moving the Gear Guard security camera feature to its own app makes sense and declutters the vehicle app. Turning the forward-facing camera into a dash cam was a no-brainer, though we notice it records a ton of "events" that are really non-events, so there's always a notification about new recordings to review. We love the ability to set a custom charging limit from the truck or the mobile app, and we appreciate the warning chime when trying to lock the truck and a door isn't closed all the way rather than just not locking. Burying the trip odometers two layers deep in a different app is obnoxious for us since we use them constantly to track our mileage. Having the climate control wait to crank up the fan is a clever and much appreciated feature on cold days, as is automatically turning off seat heaters and coolers. The bug that was screwing up the mobile app was getting super annoying and we're glad to see it squashed. Though it's late in our loan, we appreciate the ability to officially name our truck "Doc" and have it show up in both the truck and the mobile app.
Update 2023.10.03, 4/6/23
- Fixed bugs that caused the charge port door to close immediately after the plug was removed, that caused all the warning lights on the instrument cluster screen to light up and restrict acceleration, and that disabled Driver+ after the vehicle went to sleep or was restarted.
What We Think: We only noticed one of these bugs, the one that caused the charge port door to close the moment you unplugged. It only caught our hand once and immediately stopped without hurting us. Nice to not have to worry about it any more.
Update 2023.10.01, 3/26/23
- Added Plug and Charge function on Rivian Adventure Network and Rivian Waypoints chargers
- Added compatible Tesla Superchargers to navigation app
- Added a free one-year trial membership to TuneIn streaming audio
- Added ability to open the tailgate from the phone app
- Disabled charge port door auto close 30 seconds after unplugging; will still auto close when you start driving
- Reduced warnings to put your hands on the wheel while using Highway Assist in stop-and-go traffic
- Enabled scrolling through media favorites via the buttons on the left side of the steering wheel
- Fixed bugs that caused Highway Assist to have trouble centering the truck in the lane, that caused the vehicle to drain the 12-volt battery when sitting, that caused the radio to not turn back on after getting out of the truck for less than five minutes and getting back in, that caused the Wi-Fi hotspot to shut down until the vehicle was restarted, that caused the vehicle not to sleep when a phone key was nearby for extended periods and caused unnecessary range loss, and that caused Tidal to crash
What We Think: We're looking forward to being able to drop the tailgate from the phone app during runs to the home improvement store, while Plug and Charge is super convenient if there happens to be a Rivian charger nearby (there aren't any near us). Adding Tesla Superchargers with compatible Magic Dock adapters (all 11 of them nationwide) is nice if you live near one but potentially a game-changer in the future if Tesla expands the network. The continued updates to Highway Assist have made it function so much better that we've actually started using it regularly again.
Update 2023.06.05, 3/16/23
- Update specifically for vehicles with older Driver+ front camera software that tended to disengage in low-light environments
What We Think: Our truck apparently didn't need this update as it was never offered and eventually a newer update was pushed instead.
Update 2023.06.02, 3/3/23
- Added proximity locking and unlocking for the key fob in addition to the phone as key feature
- Updated the key fob software
- Increased time between warnings to keep your hands on the wheel from 10 seconds to 20 seconds
- Fixed bugs that made a paired phone not show up in the menu, that kept Gear Guard videos from being saved to a USB drive, that limited performance at startup in cold weather, and that caused the climate to reset to maximum heat after using defrost
- Made improvements to the navigation app functionality, front camera clarity and field of view, Driver+ active safety features, Media app functionality, Phone app functionality, and proximity locking and unlocking detection and functionality
What We Think: As we've noted in another story on our truck, the proximity locking and unlocking feature has been in dire need of improvement, and updates up to and including this one have helped. It's still not as good as the competition, but it's a lot better than where it started. Likewise, Highway Assist, which used to have trouble centering the truck in the lane on anything but a perfectly straight road, now works a lot better.
Update 2023.02.03, 2/7/23
- Increased EPA-estimated range from 314 miles to 328 miles through efficiency improvements and allowing the battery to discharge more than in the past
- Updated key fob software to improve connection and reduce delay between button press and vehicle reaction
- Added door ajar notification on the phone app to let you know if the vehicle fails to lock when you walk away because a door is ajar
- Added ability to turn on front seat coolers from the phone app
- Increased window closing speed
- Added a feature that automatically corrects for steering to drive straight on heavily crowned roads
- Fixed bugs: that caused the battery cooling system to wait too long to engage while fast charging which extended charging time; that locked out suspension setting changes in cold weather; that caused increased range loss due to a faulty front trunk latch sensor; that kept certain rear parking sensors on when a trailer was attached; and various display issues in the media and phone apps
- Various improvements to Highway Assist availability, window recalibration, window object detection and reaction, Gear Guard object detection accuracy to reduce extraneous videos, compatibility with third-party Level 2 chargers, and range estimation
What We Think: The extra EPA range unlocked with software improvements was the headline news, but we didn't see much of a difference on our truck. The vehicle customizes its range estimates to your driving style, and our range didn't go up much despite the software update. We saw a lot more improvement in the key fob functionality, which had been absolutely terrible in the past, either taking way too long to register a command or not registering it at all. Still not great but much, much better. Speeding up the power window closure was nice as it was noticeably slow, and the ability to turn on the seat coolers remotely will be a lifesaver in the coming months.
Update 2022.47.0, 12/19/2022
- Added address sharing from the phone app, as well as Google Maps and Apple Maps
- Added Snow mode
- Added ability to control heated front and rear seats, the steering wheel heater, and the defroster from the phone app
- Added Tidal streaming audio to the entertainment system
- Added song queues for Spotify and Tidal
- Enabled independent volume controls for different audio sources, navigation, Alexa, and phone
- Created options to limit data sharing and increase data privacy
- Fixed bugs that caused the phone app, FM radio, and infotainment system to crash, the voice navigation to unmute itself, the Gear Guard screen to come on while driving or charging, and Pet mode to turn off if you turned on the steering wheel heater
- Various improvements to: ride quality via the electronically adjustable shock absorbers, battery management, regenerative braking performance, key fob, and key card reception
- Made it easier to override the Highway Assist steering assistance, and availability of Highway Assist
What We Think: Adding a Snow driving mode just in time for winter was a smart move, but we like being able to remotely turn on the seat and steering wheel heaters even better. What we really, really like, though, is the ability to actually send addresses from our phone apps to the truck. Before this update, you could look up a charger in the Rivian phone app but couldn't send it to the truck. Same with destinations in Google and Apple Maps. Now you can plan your road trip from your phone and send it to the truck, where the onboard route planner will add in any needed charging stops. No more typing it all back in when you get in the truck.
Update 2022.343.02, 11/29/22
- Added a "Roomy" entry and exit feature that moves the seat and steering wheel back when exiting and entering the vehicle for easier access
- Added a "Shift To Neutral" button in Car Wash mode to make it quicker and easier to put the truck in Neutral
- Fixed bugs that caused problems in the navigation app, showed inaccurate range numbers, kept the vehicle from restarting charging when the limit was changed in the phone app, caused the auxiliary air compressor to fail, and several display issues related to Spotify, TuneIn, and FM radio
- Turned off window switches when Pet mode is active
- Added ability to enable or disable power tonneau cover from the Settings app
- Various improvements to the phone as key system, to speed up the route planner, to reduce Highway Assist disengagements and driver takeover requests, and to make it easier to engage Adaptive Cruise Control when Highway Assist isn't available
What We Think: This is one of the less exciting updates as it mostly consisted of bug fixes, the most pressing of which was automatically restarting charging when the limit is changed via the phone app. The Roomy entry and exit feature is a nice addition that many luxury vehicles have and was conspicuously absent until now. Speeding up the route planner and disabling the window switches in Pet mode were also good for our stress levels.
Update 2022.39.1, 10/24/22
- Added a Kneel feature to the ride height settings
- Increased the amount of time you need to hold the shifter down in order to shift to neutral in response to a media account of accidentally shifting to neutral on the highway
- Added multiple functions to the media interface, including a power button for the FM radio, a shortcut to the keypad for entering a station number, the ability to snap to a station on the tuner graphic, and a grid layout for saved and available stations
- Added an automatic setting for screen brightness that changes with ambient light levels
- Added the ability to start and stop charging and change the charging limit from the mobile app
- Added a temporary Halloween mode that changed interior lighting to red, changed the exterior lock/unlock chirp to an owl hoot, and changed the animation of pedestrians on the instrument cluster to green zombies
- Updated the layout of Gear Guard videos, improved notifications, and increased the accuracy of the motion detection algorithm to cut down on extraneous videos
- Fixed bugs that caused a false air compressor overheating warning and the Drive Mode app to stop working and turned off the rear sensor notifications in Towing mode
- Various improvements to the navigation app, driver display animations, Level 2 charging rate when the battery is hot, accuracy of the cabin temperature on the mobile app, Highway Assist lane centering, and climate control efficiency
What We Think: This was a big update, but all anyone wanted to talk about was the Halloween mode. A riddle at the end of the update notes told you where to find a temporary icon that turned everything spooky. It was the kind of silly fun that Tesla has so successfully brought to car software, and shows it doesn't all have to be bug fixes and functional improvements. On that front, we were happy to see the very useful updates to the radio interface and the ability to control charging from the phone app, which is especially useful when you forget to change the charge limit before you leave the vehicle. We thought we'd like the Kneel feature, but it takes forever to pump the truck back up to its normal ride height, and you're warned not to drive until then lest you damage something, so we ended up turning it off.
Update 2022.35.03, 9/30/22
- Added remote climate control through the mobile app
- Added ability to mute rear alerts when using the trailer hitch
- Now saves Driver+ settings
- Fixed bugs that caused FM radio to drop or not work at all, driver's side gear tunnel needing multiple button presses to open, navigation app resets, infotainment screen resets, and posted speed limit being shown in kph instead of mph
- Various improvements to infotainment system stability, infotainment system menus, Highway Assist lane centering, and climate control fan noise
What We Think: A lot of the new features added via OTA updates have been useful, but none gets used more often than cabin preconditioning. Being able to start the heater or air conditioning before you head out to the vehicle is a lifesaver in the depths of summer and winter. We're also happy to finally be able to turn off the rear parking sensors when towing since they're useless and annoying with a trailer attached. This is also the update that finally, finally fixed all the FM radio problems, from dropping out at random or refusing to play at startup.
Update 2022.31.05, 9/2/22
- Added Camping app, which includes ability to change vehicle energy use from Stay On (full power to all systems) to Normal (go to sleep but remain ready to restart at a moment's notice) to Stay Off (turn off everything but the keyless entry system to minimize range loss), ability to leave power outlets turned on for up to 24 hours at a time, ability to turn off exterior lights and sounds, ability to turn off proximity locking and unlocking, ability to turn off displays, ability to turn on exterior flood lights in the door mirrors, and ability to level the truck when parked on uneven terrain so your bed-top or rooftop tent is level
- Added ability to change units to metric
- Added ability to view range as a percentage of battery left as well as distance remaining
- Added ability to remotely open the front trunk (frunk), vent the windows, and activate the alarm from the mobile app on your phone
- Fixed bugs that caused the FM radio to freeze or restart, audio volume to change when the vehicle starts up, Amazon Alexa not to respond, the navigation trip planner to not work even though it's connected to the cellular data network, and the side mirrors to not move to the appropriate driver profile setting
- Various improvements to climate control system noise, user profile detection and loading, speedometer accuracy, range loss while vehicle is in sleep mode, garage door opener compatibility, adaptive cruise control performance, Highway Assist lane centering performance
What We Think: The Camping app is a major addition we'd heard whispers of for some time. Most notable here is the ability to turn the truck all the way off (except for keyless entry) with the Stay Off feature, which dramatically reduces range loss when the vehicle sits for days at a time, especially in cold weather. We also really appreciated the ability to leave the power outlets on when not in the cab and the ability to turn off all the super-bright exterior lights, which normally come on automatically when the truck is unlocked and would light up multiple campsites. We also really like the ability to vent the windows and open the frunk from the phone app, and we're hoping to be able to drop the tailgate and open or close the power tonneau cover from the app in the future. The ability to see the battery percentage as well as remaining range satisfies both personality types, and we're glad the FM radio is getting fixed again and that the volume stops changing every time we get in the truck.
Update 2022.27.02, 8/5/22
- Added Automatic Ride Height feature in All-Purpose and Conserve modes
- Increased DC fast charging speed from 200 to 220 kW.
- Added ability to power close front trunk (frunk) when vehicle is locked
- Fixed bugs including door handles not extending when unlocked, volume level changing after vehicle has been parked a while, cabin vents changing their settings after vehicle has been parked a while, steering wheel and infotainment screen audio controls becoming unresponsive, Amazon Alexa connectivity, cellular network connectivity, and hotspot operation when vehicle is off
- Various improvements to: Highway Assist lane centering; suspension damping in High and Highest ride height settings; automatic suspension leveling behavior; and turn signal cancellation behavior
What We Think: Everyone loves to harp on the time it takes to charge an EV, so we were excited to see the charging speed increase again, though we find the truck is rarely in the perfect condition necessary to get maximum charging speed. Even when it does max out, it doesn't stay there long before it slows down to protect the battery from excessive wear. We were also excited about automatic ride height control, which automatically lowers the truck at higher speeds to increase aerodynamic efficiency and save energy. We'd experienced the bugs in the cabin vents, the door handles, and the audio controls, so we were happy to have them fixed. Likewise, we were getting annoyed with the truck constantly releveling itself at stoplights, so it was nice to see that go away.
Update 2022.23.03, 6/30/22
- Added Pet mode with temperature monitoring from the phone app
- Enabled automatic front camera display when switching from reverse to drive
- Truck stays in Off-Road mode after you get out
- Added a new Energy app with all the charging settings and a Session Summary feature
- Added ability to control the brightness of the cabin lights
- Added ability to exit vehicle while in neutral without the vehicle shifting back to park
- Added manual control of windshield vent
- Various improvements to: automatic high-beams; user profile loading; proximity locking and unlocking; climate control performance when parked in hot weather; Car Wash mode performance; exterior camera clarity; Bluetooth connection stability; SOS call feature; Highway Assist performance around freeway interchanges; adaptive cruise control acceleration and braking behavior; lane centering performance in Highway Assist; and garage door opener compatibility
What We Think: Dog owners on staff were thrilled to see the addition of Pet mode, which keeps the climate control running when you leave the truck and displays a big message on the infotainment screen letting everyone know your pet isn't freezing or roasting in the truck. Off-roaders on staff were equally thrilled the truck would stop putting itself back in All-Purpose mode every time they got out to check an obstacle on the trail before proceeding. Since we track all our charging very closely, the Energy app and the Session Summary feature have been super helpful in quantifying charging costs, especially at home and when using the mobile charging cord.
Update 2022.19.03, 5/27/22
- Added battery preconditioning when you set a charger as your destination
- Added Soft Sand off-road mode
- Added Home setting to the proximity locking system so the truck won't keep unlocking and locking while it's parked in your garage or driveway
- Added ability to change vent and recirculation settings while climate control is in Auto mode
- Automatically checked if the front seat installed in your truck was involved in a recall
- Fixed bugs related to cabin preconditioning coming on automatically during charging, Bluetooth going offline until the next drive, cameras displaying green squares, accidental 12-volt battery drain, and Bluetooth phone connection causing audio to stay on when vehicle is unoccupied
- Various improvements to regenerative braking on low-grip surfaces, range estimation in navigation routing, vehicle hold feature, garage door opener, automatic cruise control engagement and disengagement, and Spotify interface
What We Think: Battery preconditioning is a super handy feature that gets the battery up or down to its optimal temperature before you reach a DC Fast charger, resulting in faster charging. You have to make sure you put a charger as your destination in the navigation for it to work, but it's worth it on a road trip. Turning down the sensitivity of the proximity locking and unlocking system at home is also handy, especially if you use your cell phone as your key, as we noticed it constantly locks and unlocks in the driveway every time our phone got within range, which was at least 10 feet by our estimation. Not a lot of folks drive on sand regularly, but a dedicated mode that allows more wheelspin is a huge upgrade when you do. We'd been affected by the audio staying on when the vehicle was parked and locked, and it was nice to have that squashed.
Update 2022.15.0, 5/2/22
- Garage door opener control added
- Automatic high-beams added
- Ability to turn off exterior lights during charging added
- Ability to manually control power tonneau cover added
- Show and Tell mode added to keep exterior lights and interior screens switched on when vehicle is in park
- Various updates to regenerative braking after DC fast charging, range loss while vehicle is asleep, detection of keys and phone around the front and rear of the truck, audio app performance, lane keeping assist performance, adaptive cruise control performance, highway assist performance, and bird's-eye view clarity.
What We Think: Built-in garage door openers are a popular feature the R1T initially shipped without, so it was nice to see a garage door icon suddenly appear in the top left corner of the infotainment display. Same for automatic high-beams, which help save you from forgetting to turn the high-beams off when a car is approaching. We also appreciated the ability to turn off the pulsing green lights during charging, which gets really annoying at night and which we'd been asking for since our Trans-America Trail adventure. We'd been having a lot of problems with the FM radio going offline that this update finally fixed.
Update 2022.11.02, 4/11/22
- Added Car Wash mode
- Increased DC fast charging speed from 190 to 200 kW
- Added Low ride height option in Conserve mode
- Various improvements to TuneIn audio app, range loss while vehicle is asleep, compatibility with non-Rivian chargers, traction control on muddy ground, phone app features, climate control performance, exterior camera clarity, Gear Guard app functionality, and adaptive cruise control and Highway Assist performance
What We Think: Finally, we experienced an OTA update for ourselves. This one brought some pretty big changes, namely an upgrade to 500-amp, 200-kW charging on public DC fast chargers. Rivian had been promising for years its vehicles would be capable of charging at 300 kW, and this update started to make good on the promise, shortening charging times significantly. We also deeply appreciated the new Low ride height option in Conserve mode, which had until then dropped the suspension to its absolute lowest level and made the ride quality awful. Since we wash our long-term vehicles regularly, an all-in-one Car Wash mode that closes the windows, locks the charge port doors, and turns off the automatic wipers has been quite handy down at the local drive-through car wash.
Update 2022.07.0-2022.07.03, 3/5/22
- Added Bird's Eye View 360-degree camera function to the Cameras app
- Added a trip odometer to the Vehicle app
- Unlocked the rear display, which had previously been locked until it could be updated
- Various improvements to the automatic locking and unlocking feature, accelerator pedal calibration, vehicle hold performance, adaptive cruise control and Highway Assist performance, navigation app stability and performance, infotainment screen stability and performance, Gear Guard app performance, Bluetooth connection stability, and audio availability
What We Think: This was the last update sent out before we got our R1T, and it fixed several minor disappointments we'd had with the truck during our previous evaluations. The rear screen, which handles rear-seat climate control, had been switched on but locked out since the truck went on sale and was finally functional. Similarly, all R1Ts shipped with lots of exterior cameras but only a functioning backup camera, so we were excited to finally have a 360-degree camera for tight parking lots. We'd also been asking for a trip odometer since our Trans-America Trail adventure, so we were happy to finally get one even if it's buried in the Vehicle app on the infotainment screen instead of the instrument cluster.
Update 2022.03.1, 2/4/22
- Tire pressure monitoring screen added to instrument cluster
- Videos app renamed Gear Guard and motion detection updated
- Various improvements to: regenerative braking when the battery is full or nearly full; DC fast charging performance; Level 2 charging performance; adaptive cruise control; Bluetooth connection stability; cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity; Highway Assist performance; climate control performance; range loss while vehicle is in Sleep mode; and Camp Speaker interface
What We Think: This update also came out before we got our truck, but we especially like the addition of a tire pressure monitoring screen. It's now one of three screens you can have on the left side of the instrument cluster, the other two being efficiency and navigation. Screens are switched by holding down the leftmost button on the steering wheel, which you'd never know unless you read the manual (which no one does) or someone told you.
Update 2021.49.2, 1/22
- Updated navigation app with estimated time savings on alternate routes
- Improved Bluetooth connection stability
- Other improvements to automatic locking, Highway Assist, Driver+ notifications, audio performance, climate control and defrost performance, and backup camera.
What We Think: This update came out before we got our truck, so we couldn't do a back-to-back comparison of the changes. We did notice during our Truck of the Year testing in October 2021 the navigation didn't offer alternate, time-saving routes, so we're happy this feature is now available.
