American culture wouldn't be the same without intense rivalries. Battles between Star Wars and Star Trek, Microsoft and Apple, and DC and Marvel permeate our social fabric. Car enthusiasts love a good rivalry, too. In the automotive world, there's no face-off more classically American than Chevrolet versus Ford. In this matchup, we pit two vehicles that are at the heart of each automaker's lineup against each other: the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer and the 2023 Ford Edge.

Both vehicles exist in the midsize SUV space and offer similar space, drivetrains, and technology. The biggest difference between the two models is age; the current-generation Ford Edge has been around since the 2015 model year while the Chevy Blazer has only been on the market since it was introduced for 2019. Both models have received updates in the meantime; Ford refreshed the Edge for both 2019 and 2021, and Chevy worked over the Blazer for 2023.

We expect Ford to either replace or discontinue the existing Edge soon, while the current Blazer will live on for another few years (the nameplate is guaranteed to live on for now as the all-electric Blazer EV). Read on to find out if you should snap up a 2023 Edge before it's gone or pick the recently updated Blazer.

2023 Chevrolet Blazer: Design

The 2023 Ford Edge is a sharp-looking SUV, but the second-generation model's design is showing its age. As you may expect since it's the older vehicle, the Ford Edge's exterior styling looks old compared to the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer's fresher sheetmetal. Meanwhile, Chevy overhauled the Blazer's front fascia, grille, headlights, taillights, wheels, and paint color options for the 2023 model year. The result is a taut, sporty-looking ute that boasts modern design cues like narrow headlights and sharp, yet clean, bodywork creases. The interior has also fared better over the last few years than that of the Ford Edge, especially with its Camaro-invoking vents and button layout.

2023 Ford Edge: Powertrains

Chevrolet equips the 2023 Blazer with a choice of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine developing 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and an optional 3.6-liter V-6 producing 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. Chevy matches both engines with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.

The 2023 Ford Edge offers a pair of more powerful engines. The majority of models will be equipped with the base 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine churning out a healthy 250 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. A 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 is available with the Edge ST, good for 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.

We've complained about the Ford Edge's transmission tuning and the Chevrolet Blazer's inability to lay the power down when equipped with front-wheel drive, so neither midsize SUV's drivetrain lineup receives perfect marks. In our testing, both the Ford Edge ST and V-6 Blazer sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, but the Blue Oval ultimately wins in this category due to its potent engines and standard all-wheel-drive setup across the entire model range.

2023 Chevrolet Blazer: Ride Quality and Driving Fun

Although Ford offers buffed-up powertrains, we still prefer driving the Chevrolet Blazer. We've referred to the top Edge as a "lowercase st" because it lacks the liveliness of Ford's previous ST-badged products. The Blazer, on the other hand, lives up to its athletic styling in the fun-to-drive RS trim. Even if the rest of the Blazer's trims don't evoke the Chevrolet Camaro quite as much, the entire lineup benefits from accurate steering and confidence-inspiring handling on back roads. Across the range, the Chevy exhibits good body control and ride comfort.

2023 Chevrolet Blazer: Fuel Economy

Whether equipped with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer is more efficient than 2023 Ford Edge. When equipped with the 2.0-liter turbo, the Blazer returns 22/27-29 mpg city/highway while the Ford Edge is rated at 20-21/28 mpg. The 2023 Chevy Blazer holds a similar advantage over the Edge ST when equipped with a V-6 engine with an EPA-rated 19/26-27 mpg to the Ford's 19/25 mpg. If fuel savings are a priority, stick with the Chevy.

2023 Ford Edge: Technology

The 2023 Ford Edge beats the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer by a narrow margin when it comes to technology. Chevy's midsize SUV comes packed with features including a standard 10.2-inch infotainment display with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, a 4.2-inch instrument cluster screen, six-speaker audio, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Other available technology includes an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster, Bose eight-speaker premium audio, and wireless charging.

Ford equips the Edge with a standard 12.0-inch infotainment touchscreen that also comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Instead of having just one 4.2-inch instrument cluster display, the Edge comes standard with dual 4.2-inch units. Like the Blazer, the Edge comes standard with six-speaker audio, but the Titanium and ST trims are equipped with a 12-speaker B&O arrangement. A Wi-Fi hot spot is standard, and wireless charging is available. The Edge's victory is narrow, but its screen size advantage earns it the win.

2023 Chevrolet Blazer: Safety and Driver Assistance Features

Both the 2023 Ford Edge and Chevrolet Blazer receive five-star ratings from the NHTSA and the highest possible crashworthiness scores from the IIHS. In terms of driver assistance technology, the 2023 Edge comes with standard automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane keep assist. A parking assistance suite, adaptive headlights, and adaptive cruise control are available on higher trims.

The 2023 Chevrolet Blazer includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, following distance indicator, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and automatic high-beams. Chevy makes adaptive cruise control available on all trims. Top-level RS and Premier trims come standard with a 360-degree camera system, adaptive cruise control, enhanced automatic emergency braking, and a rear camera mirror. With more standard tech and additional features available as options or as part of higher trim levels, we think the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer offers the better driver assistance package.

2023 Ford Edge: Interior Space and Cargo Volume

The 2023 Ford Edge summarily outsizes the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer in terms of interior space and cargo volume. Passenger legroom measures 42.6 inches up front and 40.6 inches in the rear in the Ford Edge but only comes out to 41.0 inches in the front row and 39.6 in the rear row of the Chevy Blazer. This isn't to say the Blazer is small, but the Edge is roomier overall.

Cargo volume is yet another advantage the Edge holds over the Blazer. With the back seats up, it swallows 39.2 cubic feet of stuff. Flipping the rear bench down opens up 73.4 cubes. The Blazer's trunk holds 30.5 cubic feet, and overall cargo space opens up to 64.2 cubes. Ford wins when it comes to interior volume.

2023 Chevrolet Blazer: Entry Pricing

Chevrolet has Ford beat with entry-level pricing. As of this writing, a 2023 Blazer 2LT with front-wheel drive and a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine starts at $36,495 while a 2023 Ford Edge SE with a turbo-four and all-wheel drive starts at $40,085. Option the Blazer 2LT with all-wheel drive and it still manages to undercut the Edge at $39,195.

2023 Chevrolet Blazer vs 2023 Ford Edge: Verdict

As a result of its modern styling and engineering, the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer defeats the 2023 Ford Edge in this comparison. Shoppers torn between this pair of American SUVs should choose the Chevy for a more sophisticated ride, stronger safety technology suite, and competitive pricing. Ultimately, both of these vehicles fall midpack in the midsize SUVs category of our Ultimate SUV Rankings, so be sure to check out our Buyer's Guide reviews to see which models are top rated.
